prep your car for winter

This might take a while.

I’ve been putting off writing about this for weeks, mostly because I didn’t want to admit that winter is finally here. But I’m heading home for Christmas tomorrow, and while my part of PA hasn’t been hit with snow yet, I hear Michigan is a veritable winter wonderland. Time to make sure I don’t break down on some frozen stretch of highway and get eaten by the abominable snowman.

The following information comes from AAA; if you look at their web site, you can find out how to properly check each of these parts. Or, if you’re like me, you can just take your car in for a tune-up, and have the service guys do it (I was all for DIYing this, but daddy-o pointed out that the Blueberry had never had a tune-up since we bought it. It was time).

The Winter Checklist:

  1. Battery and charging system (Should be checked by a professional)
  2. Battery cables and terminals
  3. Drive belts
  4. Engine hoses
  5. Tire tread
  6. Tire pressure
  7. Air filter
  8. Coolant levels
  9. Lights
  10. Wiper blades
  11. Washer fluid
  12. Brakes (Should be inspected by a professional)
  13. Transmission, brake, and power steering fluids
